About the Business Technology

The role will be in our Business Technology (BT) team, with the mission to be the best information technology (IT) organisation in healthcare, and be respected as a world leader in delivering business value through technology.

Business Technology is structured into two key areas:

  • Business Technology Business Partners who provide client-facing thought leadership and business application solutions; and

  • Business Technology centres of excellence (CoEs) who are responsible for providing a broad range of IT services for our colleagues and partners around the world.

The role will report into Artificial Intelligence Lead in the European Business Technology team. There will be frequent interactions with Pfizer colleagues and as Pfizer works with many technology partners to develop and support our applications, it is likely that there will be significant interactions with our partners.

What can I achieve and what will I be responsible for whilst completing a placement at Pfizer?

Skills that are important to this role and will be developed during the 12 month placement will include communication through liaising with colleagues and external partners, time management of and prioritisation of different requests.

What we are looking for?

We are looking for a small number of undergraduates who want to work in a growing Artificial Intelligence team, dedicated to leveraging data and advanced analytics to create a healthier world. Specifically, this group is focused on developing a set of capabilities designed to enable highly efficient exploration, experimentation, and ultimately rapid hypothesis generation based on internal, public, and commercially available datasets.

Day-to-day, you will actively support ad-hoc analysis efforts by groups across Pfizer largely focused on identifying, developing, and delivering life-changing therapies to patients around the world. Further, this role will be a key contributor to the team's on-going analytic product development activities; an essential component to creating a scalable analytics capability for Pfizer.

We are looking for undergraduates who have:

  • Ability to create technical examples, prototypes, and demonstrations based on rapidly changing data sets;

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment; with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse audience;

  • Experience with statistical modelling; specifically supervised and unsupervised Machine Learning techniques;

  • Experience with algorithms related to text analytics and network analysis;

  • Experience with SQL, Python, Scala, or Java as well as formal statistical tools R, SAS, etc.;

  • Understanding of the fundamentals of effective visualizations and current toolsets (e.g. Tableau, Spotfire, Shiny, D3.js); and

  • Exposure to MPP RDBMS (e.g. Teradata, Red Shift), Hadoop, Spark, Presto and related tools focused on the distributed processing of large datasets.

Do I have the skills?

You should be studying for a Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics or similar degree, be on track for a 2:1 (or equivalent) or above with a passion for IT and technology. We are looking for undergraduates who can solve problems during ambiguity, work as a team, and can communicate effectively to stakeholders.

There will be plenty of opportunities to improve your skills over the 12 months as well as build your knowledge of technology and biopharmaceuticals for your future career. Finally, your industrial placement must be recognised or supported by your university.

Where will I be based?

Pfizer's European Business Technology team are predominately located near Tadworth, Surrey providing European IT services to Pfizer's commercial business. Opened in 2002, the site houses around 800 employees, who work across the commercial businesses or in one of the business support functions (such as finance or HR).

Pfizer currently provides a green shuttle service for our staff to our office from/to the following locations: Crawley, Dorking, Epsom, Leatherhead, Redhill, Reigate, Sutton & Tadworth.

When can I start?

Placements will start on 2nd September 2019 and will run for 12 months.
