Pfizer Senior Scientist in Pearl River, New York


This is a laboratory-based scientist position. The candidate will be expected to develop analytical assays and design, plan and execute the qualification and transfer of these assays in support of Vaccine materials release and stability for early phase vaccine programs using analytical separations techniques (e.g., HPLC, CE, or gel electrophoresis) and spectroscopic techniques (e.g., UV-Vis and Mass Spec). All work is expected to be done in a compliant manner according to SOPs and GLP guidelines when applicable.


  • The individual should be able to identify key Vaccine drug substance and drug product attributes and provide hands on support to develop robust assays for routine use.

  • The individual should be familiar with basic regulatory expectations around product control strategies and the ICH guidelines for method qualification.

  • The candidate will be expected to contribute to the selection of the methodology and techniques to be used.

  • The individual is expected to design, plan, and execute assay development, qualification and transfer studies with a high degree of independence to support the release, stability and characterization testing of vaccine candidates for early stage development

  • Collaborate with colleagues within Vaccine Research and Development - Bioprocess, Analytical, and Formulation Development and appropriate partner lines to understand the nature and approaches of the assays to be developed, qualified and transferred

  • Perform assays to characterize new and current vaccine products

  • Plan and prioritize related assay development activities

  • Coordinate analytical support and serve as a point person for the Analytical Development group when required

  • Independently analyze, interpret, provide conclusion and present experimental data

  • Author and review laboratory methods and reports

  • Support assay training and transfer of methods

  • Keep abreast of scientific/ technological development by participating in scientific meetings/ seminars and through regular scientific review

  • Utilize new technologies and establish those technologies to characterize vaccines as well characterized biologicals, performing characterization studies and supporting activities of VRED-AD deliverables

  • Where applicable, perform job responsibilities in compliance with GLP and all other regulatory agency requirements

  • Satisfactorily complete all GLP and safety training in compliance with departmental requirements and follow appropriate safety practices in the workplace

  • Perform timely notebook entries and review for completed experiments

  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related discipline with at least 2 years of academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology postdoctoral experience or an MS plus 7 years of related work experience is required.

  • Experience in vaccine analytical assay development is essential.

  • Background in carbohydrate chemistry is a major plus.

  • A strong background in separation-based analytical techniques and qualification using ICH guidelines is essential. Experience with applying these methodologies to biomolecules, such as polysaccharides and polysaccharide conjugates is preferred. Proficiency and ability to utilize techniques such as HPLC, CE, and UV-Vis to develop methods to analyze potential vaccine antigens and other vaccine components.

  • Proficiency with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and relevant scientific software is desirable. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
