Pfizer Principal Scientist Protein Expression and Molecular Biology in La Jolla, California
BioMedicine Design (BMD) is seeking a highly motivated scientist to lead a protein expression and molecular biology group supporting the Biotherapeutics portfolio of Pfizer, Inc. in La Jolla, CA. The candidate will be responsible for leading a group of scientists focused on protein expression and DNA construct generation to support the generation of milligram to gram scale quantities of recombinant proteins. Constructs will include biotherapeutic leads, protein reagents, immunogens, and phage/yeast display reagents. This position requires strong expertise in cutting-edge mammalian tissue culture techniques using various cell lines and cell culture technologies. The ideal candidate will be highly proficient in the design of optimal processes that are consistent with team material needs for quantity and purity.
Responsible for the protein expression and molecular-related deliverables of the La Jolla BioMedicines Design protein production group
Manage and lead protein expression/molecular biology scientists. Mentor and support career development
Supervise/perform protein expression in mammalian transient and stable expression cell lines, from various shake flask scales to bioreactor systems
Supervise, perform and/or coordinate the generation of DNA constructs tailored for the expression of recombinant proteins
Assume a leadership role for the BioMedicine Design portfolio by acting as Engineering Lead for at least one biotherapeutics discovery-stage project
Design, assess and troubleshoot cell culture and expression protocols
Periodically assess site practices and promote the evaluation of new methods and technologies for protein expression and construct generation to optimize delivery to project teams
Supervise the delivery of cell culture supernatants and data analysis packages to project teams in a timely manner
Present results regularly at team meetings
Perform diligent and timely notekeeping and work process tracking
PhD in molecular biology/biochemistry/immunology/cell biology or a related discipline, 2+ years of postdoctoral experience, with 3+ years R&D experience in an industry setting OR BS/MS with 15+ years of industry experience
Detailed understanding of the scientific and technological principles behind state-of-the-art protein expression systems
Good understanding of the broader biotherapeutics drug discovery process
Extensive experience in protein expression using transient and/or stable mammalian cell culture systems
Strong expertise in design, execution, and troubleshooting of expression processes
Extensive expertise in molecular biology techniques, including primer design, PCR, mutagenesis and subcloning techniques, and E. coli cell culture
Experience with antibody and biotherapeutic expression and a working knowledge of antibody molecules
Experience with data analysis and presentation software
Excellent written and oral communication skills
2+ years of experience in a supervisory role
Experience with Insect Cell expression systems would be highly desirable
