Pfizer Senior Manager / Senior Global Category Strategy Manager in Groton, Connecticut

This role leads and develops the strategic procurement category management for Discovery and pre-clinical Scientific Services & Outsourcing across key categories and clients within WRDM. This includes category responsibility for Discovery services for both large and small molecule modalities within Medicine Design (including client lead for Worldwide Medicinal Chemistry), BioMedicine Design and Research Units. Supports wider WRDM GP organization and other category/stakeholders as determined by WRDM GP leadership. The objective of this role is to establish and manage sourcing strategies across discovery categories (biology, chemistry, ADME & Bioanalysis outsourced services) and stakeholders, while partnering with other procurement category managers and stakeholders to continuously improve through innovative solutions the value, quality and service received by Pfizer within the assigned spend areas. In addition to exemplary sourcing and demand management practices, supplier relationship management, and risk management, this role requires significant data analysis, industry trending, and benchmarking to ensure proactive and innovative strategies are delivered in a timely manner aligned with current and future business requirements.

This role will work closely with other procurement client/category leads and the Research Services zone lead for Global Procurement (GP).

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

The key tasks include, but are not limited to:

I - Category strategy collaboration and operational implementation

  • Lead the strategic sourcing process and category management for Discovery Scientific Services across Medicine Design (including Worldwide Medicinal Chemistry), BioMedicine Design, Research Units and other stakeholders as needed. Engage with other procurement category managers and client leads to maintain and implement wholistic discovery sourcing strategy across R&D stakeholders, including identify needs, conduct pre-project planning, define projects, collect internal and external data, perform strategic analysis and identify opportunities, formulate procurement strategies and develop implementation plans.

  • Review total outsourcing spend space for Discovery outsourcing and develop strategies and opportunities for improved spend management and access to preferred suppliers/CRO's.

  • Manage spend of approximately $80-$100M.

  • Lead category management for chemistry services and serve as procurement client lead for Medicinal Chemistry.

  • Lead Discovery Category Team and participate in other Category Teams as needed.

  • Develop appropriate risk management strategies which anticipate and address an extensive range of risk scenarios in order to assure supply of Pfizer's requirements.

  • Effectively utilize Pfizer's eSourcing capabilities in advancing sourcing initiatives.

  • Lead and/or participate on project teams (both Procurement and stakeholder led) as required or assigned.

II - Sourcing activity and contract negotiation:

  • Form, lead and facilitate cross-functional teams as applicable to execute procurement process and plans; enable supplier selection and decision process;

  • Lead / facilitate contract development, negotiation and execution process.

  • Partner with Researchers, ERS and other stakeholders to identify, develop and implement transformational business and supplier strategies that drive increased value in a financially constrained environment.

III - Supplier Relationship Management:

  • Execute Pfizer's Supplier Management process in accordance with program guidelines.

  • Utilize Continuous Improvement to drive the resolution of issues and improve supplier performance.

IV - Client Engagement and Customer Relationship Management:

  • Develop and maintain close relationships with key stakeholders to support the sourcing process.

  • Establish internal and external business relationships with senior leadership and use tact, influence and persuasion to achieve common objectives.

  • Pro-actively seek out opportunities for value delivery in support of stakeholder lines (savings, efficiencies, innovative technologies, new business models etc...)

  • Coordinate with other functions and impacted stakeholders to assure timely implementation and compliance with the agreed to sourcing strategies.

  • Work within Global Procurement and other Pfizer functions and departments to assist budget owners in development of operating budgets through effective communication of supplier pricing and related cost improvement initiatives.

V - Business processes and compliance:

  • Work across groups within Business Process and Operations to implement efficient P2Pprocesses with assigned suppliers.

  • Support Pfizer's Diversity and Inclusion objectives as applicable to strategic category management within Procurement.

VI - Reporting:

  • Benchmark industry best practices in the assigned spend areas and lead the adoption within Pfizer as applicable.

  • Continually evaluate and monitor market conditions and adjust sourcing strategies accordingly.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree required

  • 8 - 10 years relevant experience in procurement category management and/or complex, ideally R&D/pharmaceutical environment is required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced Degrees (eg Master's Degree and above), CPM certification, and/or degrees in related scientific disciplines desirable

  • Scientific background and awareness of science within pharmaceutical/biotech industry setting

  • Candidate must have demonstrated proficiency in managing complex, cross-functional activities and teams

  • Demonstrated knowledge of procurement systems, processes and procedures

  • Analytical and negotiation skills and engaging with suppliers; familiarity with legal contracts

  • Management skills in assessing business issues

  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal interactions skills
