Pfizer Director, Global Engineering Capital Projects (Design/Construction/Commissioning) Environment, Health & Safety in Charlotte, North Carolina
The Capital Projects Environment, Health & Safety Director will provide strategic health, safety and environmental direction to the Capital Program and Project Execution teams, to ensure all capital projects are delivered safely and in compliant manner. As a member of the GE Capital Program leadership team, this role will include;
Leading the development and execution of environment, health and safety strategies across all aspects of the capital project management cycle, from conceptual design, through full design, construction and commissioning; thereby enabling safe and sustainable project designs that can be delivered with best in class EHS performance.
The role will integrate with the Pfizer EHS risk reduction strategy and work collaboratively with the Global EHS team, to ensure consistent Engineering and EHS compliance is achieved in Capital Project execution.
Developing EHS design and project execution best practices that deliver risk reduction expectations; and in collaboration with Global EHS ensuring that these are embedded within company EHS Standards and Recommended Practices, in support of both capital projects and sustaining operations.
This role will support multiple large projects and work activities of various complexity, using leadership and interpersonal skills to advise, direct and influence project and site teams.
The GE Capital Projects EHS Leader responsibilities will encompass project planning, strategic problem-solving, engineering and regulatory compliance, project execution and delivery, team effectiveness, risk management, and communication management, to ensure integration of effective EHS risk management strategies throughout the project lifecycle. In addition, this role will be instrumental in the integration of green building principles within the design and operational cycle; to facilitate efficient use of natural resources and minimization of waste
Provide EHS leadership for the Capital Program, with a primary focus on medium ($10-50MM) and large (>$50MM) projects from concept design, through detailed design, construction, commissioning, operational readiness and support to start up. Specific responsibilities include;
Develop and implement industry leading capital project EHS management system and associated culture
Establish and keep current EHS design expectations; in conjunction with the GEHS team
Directly and indirectly lead a team of technical and functional experts to develop best practice risk management programs that manage EHS isk across all phases of the capital project management cycle
Further develop and refine the current construction safety playbook, and lead the implementation and embedding of these construction work safety practices across all projects
Provide support to GEHS in updating Standards, Recommended Practices to ensure alignment with identified Best Practices.
Develop and set in place standard 'best in class' practices and methodologies in areas such as;
Project Safety Plans
Design safety assessments
Safety assessments of service providers, contractors and sub-contractors, in particular in the bid review and selection cycle
Construction permitting, JHA, LMRAs etc...
Construction site set up standards
High hazard work practices
Implement contractor EHS pre-qualification processes; and develop methodologies to monitor performance (through a range of lagging and leading indicators) on an ongoing basis
Drive contractor EHS capability through design and delivery of effective communications (across multiple languages) include contractual expectations, orientation, daily briefings, reward and recognition
Identify, engage and grow internal and external talent to support the execution and management of capital projects
Engage and collaborate with key internal stakeholders (e.g. GEHS, GE, Quality, Site Leadership Teams) to ensure all internal and regulatory standards are met or exceeded
Engage and collaborate with key external stakeholders, such as A&E firms, CM firms, CQV teams etc...
Develop robust incident investigation process in line with current EHS Best Practice; leads, facilitates and builds capability within Engineering team to ensure investigations identify root causation and are conducted to an appropriate standard
Develop and introduce robust knowledge sharing mechanisms to drive replication of learnings, best practices and standards across all capital projects
Sponsor and/or lead network limited duration teams (LDT)
Track and communicate EHS performance metrics across the in-scope portfolio
Co-Lead/sponsor the Engineering Safety Council
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Health and Safety, Environment or other related field required.
Minimum 15 years experience in manufacturing or relevant industry required.
Minimum 7 years in EHS or risk management for large capital projects required
Experience in working in dynamic complex, matrixed business models
Experience working across disciplines and senior management in large complex organization.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in all levels of the business.
Ability to quickly assess and respond to different project requirements such as timeline, budget, culture and other local influences
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and influencing skills
Experience in working on large capital projects, with proven experience in design safety, field construction and commissioning
Demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
Due to the nature of work assignments, the role holder must be able to perform detailed work with limited oversight on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraints.
Overall physical fitness to enable travel to capital projects locations and to conduct area walkthroughs, and inspections. This will require the ability to carry necessary work materials e.g. laptop etc, to stoop; to reach; to site / stand / walk for extended periods of time; ability to climb stairs; and to use personal protective equipment including respiratory protection and hearing protection
Daily interactions with colleagues through face to face or virtual meetings enabled using technology such as webex and video conference requiring ability to effectively exchange ideas and information with colleagues using these systems.
Ability to understand, evaluate, interpret and explain multiple complex inputs and provide clear direction.
