Pfizer Senior Principal Scientist, Antibody Engineering in Cambridge, Massachusetts
We are currently seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Principal Scientist/ Group Leader with hands-on experience in antibody discovery to join the BioMedicine Design department of Pfizer. The candidate will lead a group of scientists working on development of biotherapeutics in collaboration with various disease areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and executing the strategy of biotherapeutic optimization by rational design including humanization and biophysical properties optimization. Functional responsibilities will also include antibody lead engineering and format optimization (bispecific and multi-specific) to support several biologics programs across multiple therapeutic areas. Well-qualified candidates will have a track record of scientific accomplishments as evidenced by a strong publication record, patents and pipeline contributions. The candidate should exhibit excellent communication and collaborative skills for working on cross-functional multi-disciplinary teams.
The ideal candidate would also have prior experience leading antibody discovery projects, will be a hands-on manager of direct reports and may need to work at the bench as needed. The candidate is expected to be up-to-date on advanced technologies for antibody discovery and actively apply new concepts as appropriate to continuously improve functional area capabilities.
• The candidate will oversee antibody generation efforts using structure based engineering and other emerging technologies for affinity maturation, and develop-ability improvements;
• Ensure timely delivery of antibody therapeutics to preclinical and clinical development in collaboration with Research Units at Pfizer and with external partners;
• Lead a team of B.A and Ph.D scientists focusing on the effective execution of antibody discovery on Pfizer biotherapeutic programs
• Build productive collaborations with biology scientists from Oncology, Inflammation &Immunology and Center for Therapeutic Innovation departments; co-lead multidisciplinary project teams.
• Actively participate, advise, and present to project teams and at leadership team meetings.
The candidate will be responsible for:
Leading the execution of antibody generation on multiple therapeutic programs with engineering for binding affinity, biophysical properties and reduced immunogenicity
Developing, optimizing and executing high throughput cell based assays (functional, phenotypic, reporter etc.) for screening antibody panels.
Documenting experimental data, presenting hypotheses, experimental data, conclusions and interpretations at departmental and cross-functional team meetings.
Contributing to technology development across BMD
Acting as a departmental representative, team lead and point of accountability on project teams.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Cell Biology/Immunology or a related discipline with 5+ years of research experience in Biotech/Pharmaceutical environment, a record of significant achievements in research, scientific creativity, excellent communication and leadership skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary, team-oriented environment.
Previous experience managing direct reports with a proven track record of developing careers
Hands-on work experience in antibody engineering, affinity optimization with strong understanding protein structure-function relationships.
Demonstrated track record in the development of biotherapeutics from discovery to lead optimization, expertise in the application of high throughput experimental approach driven protein optimization.
Familiarity with biotherapeutic format optimization, bi-functional scaffolds and antibody-drug conjugates
Knowledge in antibody structural modeling and sequence prediction to improve antibody functions is required.
Strong leadership skills and collaborative relations with biology team leads and effective participation in cross-functional project teams are expected. Therapeutic areas of interest include oncology, cancer immunotherapy, neurobiology, immunology, and metabolic diseases.
Track record of scientific accomplishments as evidenced by a strong publication record, patents and pipeline contribution
